Typical American Food

We’ve lived here now for quite some years and with the holidays coming up, let’s see what we have picked up from the Americans when it comes to their “GUTE KÜCHE”. Here I have compiled a few typical American Food Stuffs: Roast Turkey, Pork Loin Roast, and Cherry Cake. You will find a complete list of ingredients and our preferred way of preparing the dishes (let me be honest, I did “borrow” some of the instructions).

Typical American Food – Roast Turkey

Prep time: 40 mins, Cook time: 3 hours, Total time: 3 hours 40 mins, Serves: 10

 

Ingredients
• Turkey 6-20 pounds
• Herbed Stuffing
• 4 quarts ½ inch bread cubes
• 1 cup parsley
• 2 tsp salt
• 2 tsp thyme
• 2 tsp rosemary crushed
• 2 tsp marjoram
• 1 tsp ground sage
• 1 cup margarine
• 1 cup coarsely chopped onion
• 1 cup coarsely chopped celery
• 1-2 cups chicken broth

Instructions

Rinse bird with cold water.
Drain and pat dry.
Prepare the stuffing.
Rub body and neck cavities with salt.
Fill lightly with stuffing.
Extra stuffing can be baked wrapped in aluminum foil for the last hour of roasting time by the turkey.
Close neck cavity with skewers.
Put aluminum foil on the wing tips.
Push drumsticks under band of skin at the tail.
Weigh the turkey to get the cooking time.
Set the turkey on a rack in a roasting pan, typical American, but we’ve picked up more habits.
Brush with melted margarine.
Roast in 325F oven until internal temperature is 180F in the center of the thigh.
Let the turkey set for 10 minutes before cutting or serving.
Stuffing In a large bowl, toss bread cubes, and herbs.
Melt butter in a skillet; add onion and celery.
Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes with stirring. Mix with bread mixture.
Add 1-2 cups of chicken broth until mixture is blended and moist.
Lightly fill body and neck cavities of the turkey.

Now enjoy the holidays and great food. This is just pure fun, just like learning the German Language can be great fun for some high school students as well.

Typical American Food – Pork Loin Roast

Prep time: 30 mins, Cook time: 120 mins, Total time: 2 hours 30 mins, Serves: 6

Ingredients
• 2-4 pound pork loin
• ½ medium sized onion, diced
• ⅓ cup mushrooms, diced
• ¼ tsp salt
• ¼ pepper
• 2 cups day-old bread, diced
• 1 cup chicken broth
• ½ cup dried apricots
• ¼ tsp coriander
• ¼ tsp pepper
• ¼ tsp nutmeg
• ¼ tsp salt
• ¼ tsp garlic
• ¼ tsp chili pepper, minced

Instructions

Cut along the middle of the length of the pork loin ¾ of the way through, fold open the loin and dry it.
In a bowl combine the diced onion, diced mushrooms, salt, pepper, day-old diced bread, and chicken broth.
When completely mixed place on evenly on the open bottom of the pork loin.
Place the dried apricots on top of the filling evenly.
Close the loin and tie with together with string in several places.
Place loin in baking pan with the fatty side up, a typical example of German influence in American culture.
In a bowl combine the coriander, pepper, nutmeg, salt, garlic, and chili, mix well and place half evenly over the top of the loin.
Cook the loin in middle of the oven at 350F for 2 hours or until well done.
After the loin has cooked for about ½, place the remaining herbal mix on the top of the loin.
Remove from the oven let rest for 5 minutes, and remove string.

Typical American Food – Cherry Cake

Prep time: 20 mins, Cook time: 30 mins, Total time: 50 mins, Serves: 6
Cherry Cake is one of the classic dessert American recipes.

Ingredients

• 1 ½ cups maraschino cherries
• ½ cup slivered almonds
• ½ cup minced candied citron
• 4 cups flour
• 2 tsp baking powder
• 1 ½ cups butter
• 2 cups white sugar
• 4 eggs
• 1 cup milk
• 2 tsp vanilla
• 1 tsp almond extract
• 1 tsp lemon extract

Instructions

Heat oven 325 F.
In a medium bowl, place maraschino cherries, almonds, and citron and stir in ¼ cup of flour.
In a separate bowl, sift together remaining flour & baking powder.
In a large bowl, cream butter & sugar and beat in eggs.
Continue beating until very light and fluffy. Check also: Germans in America-Language & Food.
Combine milk, almond, vanilla, and lemon extracts in a small bowl.
Beat flour mixture into butter mixture and the milk mixture.
Fold maraschino cherry mixture into the batter and pour into two buttered bunt pans.
Bake 1 ½ hour until a toothpick comes out dry and crumb-free. Invert on a cooling rack.
Cool, wrap well in plastic and freeze.
Defrost one day before use.

Ever since the Germans arrived in America, they have had an important role in developing the nation as also shows in this “American Classic”.
